The soils at Willow Brook are a mixture of clays, with some gravel deposits associated with being in the catchment area of the River Soar. We have an average annual rainfall of 600mm.
Previously we ran a herd of Pedigree Aberdeen Angus Cattle, rearing and selling quality offspring, many of the bulls being purchased by bull hire companies and the females going to set up new herds for fellow organic farmers.
With the option to expand the Angus herd or try something different we opted to increase our small flock of Soay sheep that we had been running alongside the cattle (details here).
The farm is rich in a wide variety of valuable wildlife habitats and landscape features which we have sympathetically managed and improved with the help of the Countryside Stewardship Scheme and Natural England over the last few years, included in this we have established a number of areas of new woodland and restored hedgerows (more details).
Our aim is to continue with the conservation projects, and encourage the regeneration of arable fields back into natural grasslands with a rich abundance of wild flowers and natural grasses these will then be managed following our organic principles with low inputs and sympathetic sheep grazing
